Last checked: October 2, 2026.
This Iowa State Fair guide starts with the distinction that matters for planning: the August 13–23, 2026 fair has finished, and the next announced dates are August 12–22, 2027. The following ticket examples, attractions and transport arrangements describe the completed edition where indicated. Checked October 2, 2026, the official ticket page asks visitors to watch for 2027 information; it does not yet establish next year’s admission prices.

Choose your dates around what you want to see
The organizer’s dates page lists the completed 2026 fair and the announced 2027 edition. A date range tells you when the fair runs, but it does not establish which competition, demonstration or artist appears on a particular day.
Choose a primary interest before committing to a visit: agriculture and exhibits, food, family activities or a concert. When the daily program is released, compare the dates that offer the best combination for your party. If a single performance is essential, confirm it before arranging nonrefundable travel.
Allow enough time for the type of visit you want. An exhibit-focused day needs different timing from an evening concert outing. Keep building hours, attraction hours and the final gate-entry time separate in your notes rather than treating them as one closing time.
Admission prices and what they do not cover
The organizer’s August 6, 2026 visitor announcement listed adults at $11 in advance or $16 at the fair; children ages 6–11 at $7 or $10; and ages five and under free. Advance admission was valid for any one day. These were 2026 prices and expired purchase opportunities.
For two adults and one child ages 6–11, those listed admission prices added up to $29 in advance or $42 at the gate, before transport and extras. That historical comparison shows why checking advance-sale deadlines can matter; it is not a quote for a future family visit.
The current ticket page says to watch for 2027 admission and ticket information. When sales begin, compare the full checkout total, valid dates and refund conditions. Build separate allowances for meals, rides, games, parking and any special-event ticket.
Exhibits and agricultural experiences
The fair’s 2026 family program highlighted the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center, hands-on livestock areas and the Avenue of Breeds. These make agriculture a useful focus for visitors who want more than rides and food. Check the next edition’s program for the precise exhibits and demonstrations available on your day.
Give an exhibit enough time to be interesting. Read the interpretation, watch a demonstration when scheduled and leave room for questions. A route that includes fewer thoughtful stops can offer more than a long list of places passed quickly.
If traveling with children, see our Iowa State Fair with kids guide for Little Hands on the Farm and the difference between included activities and paid classes. Adults can use the same principle: pick one familiar attraction and one subject you would like to discover.
Free-stage entertainment and Grandstand shows
The April 2026 entertainment announcement identified performances included with gate admission, including the Susan Knapp Amphitheater lineup. By contrast, the Grandstand page states that its event tickets do not include fair admission. Official online Grandstand tickets are sold through the fair website and Etix.
That distinction affects both cost and planning. A paid concert can be the reason for the trip, while an included performance can fit into an exhibit day without another show ticket. Check the specific event rather than assuming every stage uses the same admission arrangement.
For a concert visit, leave time to enter the fairgrounds, eat and reach the performance area. Review the venue’s own permitted-item rules before carrying bags or containers into the grounds. A general fair policy is not necessarily the policy for every ticketed venue.
Elwell Family Park: check the individual event
The 2026 Elwell Family Park announcement mixed free-with-admission events, such as charros performances and the electrical utilities lineman rodeo, with separately ticketed rodeo, tractor-pull and racing events. The park’s name alone did not tell you whether a particular performance cost extra.
Read the listing for the specific date, not just the venue overview. Compare gate-opening time with showtime, look for the correct age categories and add any separate fair admission. If a group is splitting between activities, agree on a meeting place that both groups can reach easily.
For future planning, use the old program as an example of the range of entertainment, not a promised lineup. Wait for the next announcement before choosing a day solely around an event that appeared in 2026.
Driving, shuttles and rideshare
The 2026 transport page listed $10 vehicle parking in Lots A, B and C and a free Blue Line shuttle within those lots. A separate free CIT bus operated from Southridge Mall, while DART offered paid round-trip shuttle service from other locations. Rideshare pickup and drop-off used the designated area near Gate 8.
Choose transport for the return journey as well as arrival. A free bus may suit a flexible daytime outing, but you still need to know its departure point and final service. Driving offers a different set of choices about leaving, with parking access and the walk back to consider.
Save the exact service or lot name and check the operating date. The 2026 bus page included an earlier finish on the final Sunday, illustrating why a standard daily timetable can be misleading on the last day. Confirm all future routes and prices before traveling.
A practical first-visit plan
Put one scheduled event into the day, then group nearby exhibits around it. Plan a meal break before the next long walk. Keep a second performance or ride session optional so that a queue does not force you to rush the rest of the outing.
The official FAQ links a fairgrounds map that includes water-refill locations. Save the map and essentials offline, and identify a meeting point for anyone who separates. Review current accessibility information in advance if a facility or service is essential to your visit.
Before departure, verify the year printed on your sources, the daily program, weather and transport. The fair website’s new-year banner can appear above pages that still describe the previous edition. The date attached to the individual detail is what determines whether you can rely on it.
