Weekend Covered: Friday, October 2–Sunday, October 4, 2026.
Last Updated: October 2, 2026, 5:15pm Pacific. All event times are local. This is a national selection, not a complete local calendar.
For events this weekend, the actual date is more useful than a broad “2026” headline. This guide covers October 2–4: a free San Francisco music festival, Louisville art browsing, Tennessee storytelling, regional fairs and Saturday openings. Pick a reachable destination first. These are independent options across the country, not a route that can reasonably be completed in one weekend.

Choose Friday, Saturday or Sunday
Friday, October 2
Friday choices include St. James Court Art Show, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, National Storytelling Festival, Pacific Airshow, the State Fair of Texas, The Big E and Tulsa State Fair. At St. James, the verified Friday window is 10am–6pm. Hardly Strictly gates open at 11am; that is a gate time, not a promise that every stage begins then. Pacific Airshow lists gates at 9am with flying approximately 10:30am–4pm.
Saturday, October 3
Saturday adds Balloon Fiesta, National Apple Harvest Festival, 2nd Street Festival and the Carolina Renaissance Festival opening weekend. Ohio and Maryland Renaissance seasons also operate. Apple Harvest opens at 8am and runs to 6pm Saturday. Richmond’s 2nd Street starts at 11:30am. Avoid planning a dawn balloon outing and a distant afternoon event as though travel and recovery time were negligible.
Sunday, October 4
Sunday is the final day of this edition of The Big E and the weekend’s art, music and storytelling festivals. Several closing times are earlier: St. James ends at 5pm, Apple Harvest at 5pm and 2nd Street at 6pm. A Sunday option may reduce your available time after a long drive, so compare the closing time before buying admission.
The weekend selections
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
Albuquerque, New Mexico · October 3–11, 2026
Venue: Balloon Fiesta Park
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid per session; 12 and under free
A balloon gathering turns the sky into the main stage. Choose it for a spectacle whose scale is best understood from the field, while keeping your plans flexible enough for a grounded session.
Plan the visit: Weather controls flight activity; morning and evening are separate sessions.
State Fair of Texas
Dallas, Texas · September 25–October 18, 2026
Venue: Fair Park, 3809 Grand Avenue
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid; rides extra
Dallas pairs agricultural exhibits with a big-city fair outing. It suits visitors who want several kinds of entertainment in one place rather than a single performance with a fixed finish.
Plan the visit: After 5pm, entrants 17 and under need a chaperone aged 21+; maximum six minors.
The Big E
West Springfield, Massachusetts · September 18–October 4, 2026
Venue: Eastern States Exposition, 1305 Memorial Avenue
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid; ages 5 and under free
The New England focus gives this fair a regional identity. Treat the state buildings and agriculture as anchors, then decide how much midway time your group actually wants.
Plan the visit: Rides and some premium shows cost extra.
Tulsa State Fair
Tulsa, Oklahoma · October 1–11, 2026
Venue: Expo Square, 4145 East 21st Street
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid; ages 4 and under free for fair admission
Tulsa lets visitors combine a fair with a separately ticketed ice production. Compare those admission products before purchasing so you do not accidentally pay twice for access already included.
Plan the visit: Disney On Ice requires tickets from age 2; its ticket includes fair admission.
National Apple Harvest Festival
Biglerville, Pennsylvania · October 3–4 and 10–11, 2026
Venue: South Mountain Fairgrounds, 615 Narrows Road
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid; under 12 free
Apples give the crafts and demonstrations a coherent seasonal theme. The two-weekend format provides a useful alternative date, but it is not an invitation to arrive on a weekday.
Plan the visit: Saturday 8am–6pm; Sunday 8am–5pm; mixed grass and gravel paths.
2nd Street Festival
Richmond, Virginia · October 3–4, 2026
Venue: Jackson Ward, North 2nd Street between Broad and Jackson
Status: Free event · Admission: Free general admission
Jackson Ward's neighborhood setting is central to this selection. Combine a short stage visit with artists and community programming rather than treating it as an anonymous music field.
Plan the visit: Saturday 11:30am–7pm; Sunday noon–6pm; no dedicated parking.
St. James Court Art Show
Louisville, Kentucky · October 2–4, 2026
Venue: Historic Old Louisville, four-block show district
Status: Free event · Admission: Free admission
This is a browsing-focused art weekend in a distinctive historic neighborhood. It rewards visitors who enjoy talking about craft and design more than those looking for rides or a headline show.
Plan the visit: Friday/Saturday 10am–6pm; Sunday 10am–5pm; rain or shine.
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
San Francisco, California · October 2–4, 2026
Venue: Golden Gate Park: Hellman Hollow, Lindley and Marx meadows
Status: Free event · Admission: Free; no ticket required
Free admission makes this a useful music-discovery choice. Decide which part of the park and program matters most to you; an unrestricted wish list can turn into a long day of walking.
Plan the visit: Gates Friday 11am, weekend 9am; music ends 7pm; security bag limits.
National Storytelling Festival
Jonesborough, Tennessee · October 2–4, 2026
Venue: Downtown tents and theaters
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid; specialty shows separately ticketed
Storytelling asks for attentive listening rather than constant movement. It is a strong alternative for travelers who would rather follow a voice and narrative than navigate a midway.
Plan the visit: After Hours is for adults; daytime sessions last about an hour.
Carolina Renaissance Festival
Huntersville, North Carolina · Weekends October 3–November 22, 2026
Venue: 16445 Poplar Tent Road
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid date-specific; ages 4 and under free general admission
The staged village offers a series of small discoveries, from demonstrations to the joust. Select a few performances and let the spaces between them remain flexible.
Plan the visit: 9:30am–5:30pm; paid rides; VIP joust seats need tickets for all ages.
Pacific Airshow Huntington Beach
Huntington Beach, California · October 2–4, 2026
Venue: Beach precinct, 21101 Pacific Coast Highway
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid viewing precinct; child policy varies by package
Aircraft are the main attraction, with beach weather and intense sound shaping the experience. This is a deliberate choice for aviation enthusiasts, not a quiet seaside afternoon.
Plan the visit: Gates 9am; flying approximately 10:30am–4pm; very loud.
Maryland Renaissance Festival
Crownsville, Maryland · Weekends August 29–October 25 and September 7, 2026
Venue: Revel Grove
Status: Tickets on sale · Admission: Paid online date-specific; ages 6 and under need a free ticket
The ticket rules make advance planning essential. Once admission is secured, build a day around a few performances rather than relying on a spontaneous purchase at the gate.
Plan the visit: 10am–7pm; no gate sales; confirm availability before driving.
Ohio Renaissance Festival
Waynesville area, Ohio · Weekends and Labor Day, September 5–November 1, 2026; 10:30am–7pm
Venue: Renaissance Park, 10542 East State Route 73
Status: Confirmed · Admission: Paid admission; selected games included
The children's trading game creates an interactive alternative to simply watching a stage. Choose suitable performances and keep adult pub-oriented activities separate from a family route.
Plan the visit: October 31–November 1 child-free promotion applies to ages 12 and under on those dates only.
Best free events this weekend
Three clear free-admission choices are Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco, St. James Court Art Show in Louisville and 2nd Street Festival in Richmond. The format differs: choose listening, art browsing or neighborhood culture. Free entry does not reserve a seat, eliminate crowd limits or include food and travel. Use the specific venue rules for bags and arrival.
Family events and live shows
For a family outing, compare a daytime program at 2nd Street, Apple Harvest, The Big E or a Renaissance village. The National Storytelling Festival suits children who enjoy listening; its adult After Hours program is a separate consideration. Tulsa’s Disney On Ice uses a separate show ticket with its own child policy and includes fair admission. Pacific Airshow is a more intense sound environment; choose it deliberately for an aviation-interested group.
Make a last-minute plan
Start by opening the official source for one event. Confirm that your chosen date is operating, look for an alert banner and check the ticket type. If the event requires online admission, finish checking availability before you drive. Maryland specifically does not sell at the gate. “Tickets on sale” describes a sales channel observed during research, not a guarantee of remaining inventory for a particular session.
Choose one anchor and a flexible nearby activity. For a fair, that could mean a must-see exhibit followed by an optional midway visit. For a festival, it could mean one scheduled performance with time for browsing. Do not rely on a national guide to estimate local traffic, parking capacity or the time needed to cross a large event site.
Check weather-sensitive plans twice: before booking a nonrefundable trip and again before departure. Balloon flights and aircraft programs depend on conditions, while a rain-or-shine art show can still be an uncomfortable outing for an unprepared group. An organizer’s cancellation policy and a weather forecast answer different questions. Keep the official alert page accessible on your phone.
If you arrive late, distinguish closing time from last admission. If you bring children, check the age rule for the hour you will actually enter, especially the Texas fair’s after-5pm chaperone policy. If you leave for a meal or rest, verify re-entry before crossing the exit. These details can change whether a spontaneous outing remains practical.
Find a local backup
A nearby library, museum or community calendar can supply a smaller option when major tickets are unavailable. DayZora’s community-event search guide explains where to look. Confirm the date directly rather than relying on an old social post. The October guide is useful when you can move the outing to a later weekend.
Frequently asked questions
Which weekend does this page cover?
Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4, 2026. The date range and update time are displayed at the top; all event times are local.
Can I attend every listed event on Friday?
No. Balloon Fiesta, Apple Harvest, 2nd Street and the Carolina Renaissance opening begin Saturday. Weekend Renaissance seasons also need their own operating-day check.
What if tickets are sold out?
Choose another official session or a verified free event. Do not assume gate sales or a resale listing guarantees entry. Check the organizer’s authorized ticket links.
Are next weekend’s events included?
No. The monthly page covers later October dates. This page’s selections are tied to October 2–4 and need fresh verification for a new weekend.
Does confirmed mean the event cannot be cancelled?
No. It means an official schedule was found when checked. Weather, operations and ticket inventory can change afterward.
Explore event locations
The map is a location aid, not an entrance, parking or route guarantee. District and multi-venue events are shown as broad areas. Select an event to inspect its location, then use the official event map for gates, road closures and accessible arrival.
