October 13, 2026 update: The official admission page still leaves age four unclear: it says under four free but starts paid child tickets at age five. Ask the organizer or check the dated ticket selector before buying for a four-year-old; do not infer eligibility from the age gap.
Last checked: October 2, 2026.
Planning the Arizona State Fair with kids is easier when you separate three decisions: admission, ride spending and how long your family wants to stay. The 2026 fair operates Thursday–Sunday from October 1 to November 1 in Phoenix. A younger child can enjoy an outing built around animals and a few selected rides; a confident rider may get more value from a longer Midway visit. Build the plan around the child rather than the largest available package.

Quick facts for the 2026 edition

Start with height and interest, not just age
Measure your child before choosing rides, then review the organizer’s ride list. Published examples include the Carousel at 32 inches and five tickets, Farm Tractors at 32 inches and four tickets, and Balloon Ride at 36 inches and four tickets. These examples help shortlist options; the operator’s posted requirements still apply.
Height eligibility does not tell you whether a child will enjoy spinning, heights or noise. Let them watch a ride before committing to it. For siblings of different heights, choose an alternative activity in advance so one child is not left with an entire afternoon of watching the other.
Compare individual rides with a wristband
At the listed $1.25 per ticket, a four-ticket ride costs $5 and a five-ticket ride costs $6.25. Two children taking three four-ticket rides each would spend $30 on those rides. That example excludes admission, games, food and any adult riding alongside them.
The organizer advertises Thursday/Sunday wristbands at $55 including taxes and fees, with purchase and redemption by 7 p.m. and riding until 9 p.m. Four named premium rides are excluded. The displayed Dream Pass presale deadline was September 30, so it should not be treated as an available new purchase after that date. Current ride offers and exclusions.
A wristband is useful only if your child can and wants to use enough included rides during its valid hours. Compare eligible choices, expected breaks and your departure plan before paying. Do not count a ride twice merely because it appears in an attractive package description.
Prepare Read & Ride before the trip
Children aged 5–14 can complete the fair’s official book-report form to earn ride passes. Bring the signed reports to the Read & Ride booth inside the Fair Marketplace on the west side of the grounds; an accompanying parent or guardian aged 18 or older must be present for redemption. Download and follow the official Read & Ride instructions for the current limits and eligible rides.
This works best as a prepared activity, not something to improvise in an entrance queue. Let the child choose a book they want to discuss, complete the required report and place the forms with your tickets. The program offers ride passes; it should not be mistaken for free general admission or unlimited rides.
Build a visit around one animal display
Animal exhibitions give a family route another focus besides spending at rides and games. The organizer’s 2026 schedule lists rabbits/cavy and poultry for October 1–4, youth livestock for October 8–11, sheep for October 15–18, meat goats for October 22–25 and dairy goats for October 29–November 1. Check the dated animal program for your outing.
Choose the display that interests your children and pair it with a small ride selection. Keep a watching activity separate from an assumed hands-on experience: a livestock show is not automatically a petting session. Follow the staff’s boundaries and allow time for the child to observe without rushing to the next stop.
Arrival and the first few minutes
Use the main Arizona State Fair guide to choose parking or the Phoenix College shuttle. The shuttle does not run Thursday and begins later on Friday, so it may not match every family arrival window. Check your departure option before joining the first queue.
Guest Services offers a free child-contact wristband. The FAQ places service points at the southwest corner of the Coliseum and inside the Fair Marketplace. Pick one up early if useful for your family, then agree on an age-appropriate meeting plan. Guest Services information.
A suggested short visit is arrival and orientation, one animal stop, two or three chosen rides and a meal or break. Decide at that point whether to extend the outing. This is an editorial planning sequence, not a timed program or a prediction of queue lengths.
Check the young-child ticket wording
The admission website says ‘under 4,’ while the official Etix child-ticket selector explicitly says ‘4 & Under FREE.’ The latter is the more specific ticket-level wording checked for this guide. If traveling with a four-year-old, verify the seller’s current wording before arrival. Check the official ticket selector.
Keep the day’s budget in separate parts: entry, transport, food and selected activities. This makes it easier to change the ride plan without losing track of the total, especially when children of different ages need different ticket products.

Frequently asked questions
Does a child admission ticket include rides?
Treat admission and rides as separate purchases unless the specific product explicitly bundles them.
Who can use Read & Ride?
The published program is for children aged 5–14 and requires the official reports and an accompanying parent or guardian aged 18+ for redemption.
Is the Dream Pass presale still current on October 2?
The published offer ended September 30 at 11:59 p.m. Do not assume that expired presale remains available.
Can I choose rides using age alone?
No. Review height and individual ride restrictions, and consider whether the child is comfortable with the experience.
