October 13, 2026 update: The official opening schedule distinguishes gate and ride times: October 15 opens at noon; October 16–18 gates open at 9 a.m. and rides at 10 a.m. Visitors must be inside before 9:45 p.m.; there is no re-entry after that cutoff. Hours are weather-dependent.

The 2026 North Carolina State Fair runs October 15–25 at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. This NC State Fair guide starts with the decisions that affect your day most: when the gates open, which admission price applies, where to arrive and how to divide your time between exhibits and the Midway. A fair visit can work as an afternoon of agriculture and food or a longer ride-focused outing; choose the shape of your day before buying extras.

Match your arrival to the right opening time
Gates open at noon on October 15 and at 9 a.m. on the remaining fair dates. Friday and Saturday closing is 11:30 p.m.; other days close at 11 p.m., weather permitting. Rides start at noon on opening day and 10 a.m. afterward. Exhibit halls have their own closing time. Review the daily hours before choosing an arrival window.
An early arrival can give you time for an exhibit before the rides begin. An evening arrival needs more care: the fair’s closing time is later than its entry cutoff. Leave enough time for parking, security and walking to your first activity, especially if someone is meeting you after work. Do not use the published closing time as your latest arrival time.
Compare admission before adding ride products
The official ticket table lists advance admission through October 15 at $10 for ages 13–64 and $5 for ages 6–12. October 16–25 gate rates are $13 and $7 respectively. Ages 65 and older are $5; children 5 and younger are free. Online tickets carry a 10.725% ticketing fee, so compare the final checkout total.
Think of your spending in four parts: admission, rides, food and optional activities. A lower entry price does not mean every attraction is included. Keep the ticket confirmation accessible offline and read its redemption instructions before leaving home. If your outing depends on a particular performance or experience, confirm that item separately before paying for the rest.
Choose a parking plan for Raleigh
The official transport page lists free parking on State Fair and Carter-Finley property, with event-related exceptions. It specifically marks Lenovo Center parking as reserved or paid on October 21. Neighboring private lots are independently operated; do not assume they share the fair’s conditions.
Some off-site shuttle-hour entries on that page still show weekday/date combinations from an earlier year. Confirm the current shuttle schedule before relying on it for a 2026 visit. For rail travel, check the booking itinerary for the fair stop, station code NSF, including the return journey. This is different from simply booking a train to downtown Raleigh.
If you are staying overnight, compare the journey between your accommodation and the fairgrounds at the times you expect to travel. A downtown address does not automatically mean a short walk to this venue. Save your parking area, gate and return route while you arrive, when landmarks are easier to remember.
Build an exhibit route before entering the Midway
The organizer’s visitor information highlights livestock displays, agricultural exhibits, arts and crafts, and heritage demonstrations. Use those areas to give your visit a focus beyond the ride queues. A practical first route is one exhibit area, a meal and one entertainment or ride session.
Choose activities according to the people with you. Someone interested in farming may want more time around animals and machinery; a craft enthusiast may prefer displays and demonstrations. Leave space between timed activities to look at unexpected exhibits. Before setting off across the grounds for a demonstration, check the current day’s program rather than assuming it runs continuously.
The 2026 activities page also offers school-level scavenger hunts and other challenges. These can give a mixed-age group a shared purpose without requiring everyone to choose the same rides.
Decide whether this is a ride day
Ride cards and ordinary unlimited-ride wristbands do not include fair admission. The organizer also excludes the State Fair Flyer, SkyGazer and Slide from those ordinary products. A wristband is valid for one day, and the rider must attend redemption. Check the ride product conditions before choosing a package.
Write a realistic ride list first. Consider eligibility, who wants to ride together and how much of the day you want to spend in queues. If exhibits and food are the priority, a ride-heavy purchase may not fit the plan. Our NC State Fair with kids guide goes further into family pacing and the difference between admission age and ride eligibility.
A flexible first-visit plan
For a morning start after opening day, begin with an exhibit, then decide whether to ride when the Midway opens. Take a meal break before adding another major activity. For an afternoon visit, select the one experience you most want and allow other stops to fit around it. These are suggested approaches, not an official timetable or a claim about queue lengths.
Before departure, review your date’s hours and transport notices, charge your phone and decide how you will pay for food and games. The fair’s FAQ says it is not entirely cashless and some vendors do not take cards. A small planned cash allowance can be easier to manage than an unplanned withdrawal during the visit. Keep the day short enough that the trip back to your vehicle or station remains manageable.
