October 13, 2026 update: A family budget needs both admission and ride costs. The organizer lists children five and younger as free for entry, not free for rides. Discount ride vouchers end October 14; compare the dated voucher price with the individual rides your children can actually use.

Last checked: October 2, 2026.

The South Carolina State Fair offers free admission for children 5 and younger, but rides, meals and other purchases still need a separate allowance. For a 2026 family visit, the most useful choices are when to attend, how much riding your children will enjoy and whether a wristband or shared ride card fits that plan. Check the youth-entry policy as well: Friday and Saturday have stricter all-day requirements than the rest of the week.

Start with the ages in your group

A family with two adults and two children aged 5 or younger needs two paid admission tickets, not four. At the advertised $11 advance online price, that example is $22 for admission. With ordinary $10 parking, it becomes $32 before food, rides and purchases. The October 24 parking surcharge would add another $10.

A child aged 6 or older is outside the free-entry age group. Count each traveler separately instead of treating ‘children’ as one ticket category. These figures are calculated examples using the official ticket prices and parking rates, not a family package.

A wristband and a shared card solve different problems

A ride voucher can be redeemed for one person’s Pay-One-Price wristband on one fair day, or for a 90-ticket reloadable ride card that can be shared. Before October 15, the advertised voucher price is $32 at participating Circle K stores or $33 online. The rider must be present when exchanging for a wristband.

Most kiddie rides are listed at nine tickets. At that rate, a 90-ticket card covers ten rides in total: for example, five each for two children. That is an arithmetic illustration, not a promise that every chosen ride has the same price. Compare it with the number of rides each child realistically wants. Ride products and ticket counts.

A shared card can fit a small selection across siblings; individual wristbands can suit children who want a longer ride-focused session. Check height and other eligibility rules before counting a ride in that comparison. A child who meets an admission age category is not automatically eligible for every ride.

Understand the parent requirement before planning a teen outing

The official policy requires visitors under 18 to enter with their parent, who must be at least 21. On Friday and Saturday this applies all day; Sunday–Thursday it applies after 5 p.m. The wording says parent, so do not assume an older friend automatically qualifies. Youth admission policy.

For mixed-family groups or another caregiving arrangement, confirm the organizer’s requirements before travel. This is especially important when a group planned to arrive separately or meet inside. Resolve the entrance arrangement before buying tickets for an outing that depends on it.

Consider the October 22 sensory-friendly session

Sensory Friendly Morning is scheduled October 22 from 10 a.m. to noon. Guests with sensory processing disabilities may enter from 10 a.m.; general public opening is 11 a.m. Selected kiddie rides operate with reduced sound and lighting, and ordinary ride charges apply. People with sensory processing disabilities and one accompanying attendant, friend or family member have free entry that day.

The organizer says no preregistration is needed and notes that background sounds cannot all be eliminated. At noon, regular sound levels return. Read the complete session details to decide whether the arrangements match your family’s needs.

Plan a stopping point before the quieter period ends if that transition could be difficult. Bring the comfort items your child uses and keep the route flexible. A reduced-sensory session is a specific accommodation window, not a guarantee that every place will be quiet.

Plan activities with a break between them

Choose one scheduled performance from the fair calendar and combine it with a short ride list or an exhibit area. The attractions directory can help you find animals, crafts, Heritage Village or other stops that fit your children’s interests.

Avoid placing a long ride queue immediately before the performance your child most wants to see. Build in time for a meal, a restroom stop and the walk back toward your exit. If the group wants more after a break, add another activity; if not, the visit can finish after its main highlights.

Pack and arrive with the return trip in mind

The clear-bag limit is 12 by 6 by 12 inches. Medical items and diaper bags with a baby may be approved after inspection. The fair permits one sealed water bottle or one empty refillable bottle; food-allergy exceptions require advance approval with 24 hours’ notice. Check the full bag and food policy before packing.

Save the gate and parking location, identify which adult holds each child’s tickets and agree on a meeting point. For daily opening hours and driving entrances, see the main South Carolina State Fair guide. A clear exit plan is useful even when you expect to stay only a few hours.
